Blinds work after the heat is already inside
Interior blinds and curtains block the light, but the heat has already come through the glass. An awning shades the window from the outside, so the room stays cooler, the glare stays off your screens, and floors and furniture fade less.
DOE-funded research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA found that exterior shades cut air-conditioning use by about 20% compared with bare windows, and kept rooms 2–3°F cooler than interior blinds. See what the research found.

Should I choose a retractable or a fixed window awning?
Choose a retractable drop arm awning if you want shade on sunny days and full light the rest of the year. Choose a fixed awning if you want permanent shade and rain cover over a window or door, and a classic look.
How much does a window awning cost?

Will a window awning block my view?
A drop arm awning can be set at any angle, so you can lower it to block low sun or raise it to keep the view. When it's retracted, the window is fully open.
Can a window awning be motorized?
Yes. A Somfy motor with a remote or wall switch replaces the hand crank, and sun and wind sensors can run the awning for you.
