Why it lasts

Color all the way through

Most fabrics are dyed on the surface. The color sits on the outside of the yarn, so sun and cleaning wear it away over time.

Sunbrella adds the pigment while the acrylic fiber is being made, so the color goes all the way through. Think of an apple and a carrot: an apple's color is only in the peel, while a carrot is orange to the core. Sunbrella is the carrot. That's why it keeps its color through years of sun, and why you can clean it with diluted bleach.

What you get

Built for outdoor shade

Fade-resistant color

Solution-dyed acrylic holds its color far longer than surface-dyed fabric, even on a south- or west-facing wall.

Sheds water

Water-resistant and quick to dry, so light rain beads up and rolls off instead of soaking in.

UV protection

Sunbrella shade fabrics carry the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation as part of a complete sun protection routine.

Easy to clean

Most dirt comes off with mild soap, water and a soft brush. Tough stains can be treated with diluted bleach.

Choosing a color

More than 150 colors and patterns

Solids, stripes and textures, from quiet neutrals that match your siding to classic awning stripes. Colors look different outdoors than on a screen, so we bring physical samples to your free consultation and hold them up against your house.

Care and cleaning

Keeping it looking new

Once or twice a year, with the awning extended: brush off loose dirt, hose it down, then scrub with mild soap and water and a soft-bristled brush. Rinse well and let it dry fully before you retract it. Retract the awning in storms and heavy rain.

Common questions

Sunbrella fabric questions

How long does Sunbrella awning fabric last?

With routine care, expect about 10 to 12 years from the fabric on a retractable awning in the Pacific Northwest. Retracting it in storms and cleaning it once or twice a year helps it last.

Can I clean Sunbrella fabric with bleach?

Yes. Sunbrella's color goes all the way through the fiber, so diluted bleach won't fade it. For most dirt, mild soap, water and a soft brush are all you need.

Is Sunbrella fabric waterproof?

Sunbrella awning fabric is water-resistant and sheds light rain. A retractable awning should still be retracted in heavy or steady rain so water doesn't pool.

Can you put new Sunbrella fabric on my existing awning?

Yes. We can replace the fabric on almost any awning, even if another company installed it. See awning recover and repair.
